Our second annual Formula Mini Grand Prix was great fun and our first run on the historic Fuji Speedway circuit. As before this was a full F1 style event with three rounds of knockout qualifying and a full distance of 305km (41,694ft at scale).

The inaugural track record goes to Brad with a 13.050 scored in Q2, backed up with a 13.181 in race conditions. There were some fast pit stops falling in the 50sec range, with Dusty edging out Hood and Joe with a 52.551 stop (about 3.5 laps).

The race was a spirited battle with most of the cars lapping within 0.335 seconds of each other! This was No1 Jumper's rookie run in one of our special events and his times improved 2.11sec over the course of the day, which was worth about 14 laps over the race distance.

There were four lead changes among three drivers, but ultimately Dusty's Kimi piloted McLaren got out front and stayed there, uncharacteristically not having a wheel fall off. That honor went to Joe this year... twice. This also marks the first win by the Underdogs team of Dusty and DJ by claiming the Constructors Championship title.

This was our first annual Formula Mini Grand Prix special event. The race was a full length analog of the real FIA event. Three rounds of knockout qualifying followed by a 305km scale race. The circuit was a replica of the 1989 United States Grand Prix of Phoenix, AZ.

I would like to have had a larger field of drivers but we had a great time just the same. The inaugural track record goes to Paul with a scorching 9.818sec lap! Fast Pit stop was also by Paul. Off track, change batteries, and back around in 32.715 seconds. We had 5 lead changes. Hood had a comfortable four lap lead when disaster struck in the form of an undetermined steering failure forcing him to retire on lap 176.

All the drivers were able to lap similar times and put up a good battle. Collisions were few, but often spectacular as is the peril of open wheel racing. Fortunately no F1 cars were (overly) harmed in the making of this race. I look forward to the 2011 Championship next year.

Update: The steering failure in Hoods car was caused by the tiny wires powering the servo motor. One snapped off and the other was held on by a single strand.
