2009 Season, Week 1 (November)

This begins Season V of our local series. This year we've added the OCD to our line up with the ATM, F1 and AZGT. The Counterclockwise round was eliminated from the AZGT to accommodate for time, and everything staged well for an easy, unrushed day.

The racing is very even here at the start with much of the field finishing on or near the same lap. In the AZGT Sprint C, if I hadn't crashed out of the track on the last lap, the top five would have finished together!

F1 saw the most brutal racing in our club history with a 100% attrition rate. Every car was off track for repairs at least once. There was much running about as the longer 'half real length' format allowed time for fixes and everyone scrambled to reclaim laps. Wow that was tough.

How important is scoring a bounus when it's only worth 1 point? In the OCD, if Brad hadn't lead a lap in all three Dashes, Joe would have the championship lead with tied points. Every point counts!

That was a great start to the season and I look forward to continuing the chase next month.

2009 Season, Week 2 (January)

That's the 1/3 point in the season and we've seen some big points jumps.

Paul has stormed to the lead in the AZGT while Joe has taken the front in F1 and the OCD. The point spreads are also quite close so many are in contention for championships. Only two points seperate 1st and 2nd in the AZGT, Paul trails by 6 points in OCD, and six drivers in tied in F1!

Next month is the 30min Petit Le Mans in AZGT, so get those batteries matched.

2009 Season, Week 3 (February)

Mid season means the AZGT 30min Petit Le Mans. I had a solid lead, but this one came down to fuel milage. Hood's new batteries won the day. And his hard charging at the end jumped him up four spots to lead the championship.

Tight battles continue in the other series as well. There were some technical glitches this time. We had to use the CORE lap counter for the F1 series, so the results are only listed out to the hundredths of a second. And in the OCD an error in minimum lap time means no bonus for Fastest Lap. We were able to reconsturct the correct lap count though.

Three weeks left in all four series and there are still tight battles for the top spots. Its anyones championship. See you all in March.

2009 Season, Week 5 (April)

A great day of very, very close racing. Just look at the intervals!

Next month is the season finale for all four series. The AZGT is the big 1hr Le Mans race, so only one chance to score points. Paul has taken the lead, but with 21 point to the winner, 3rd place is still in striking distance. Of course we all know the real battle is for 3rd place and the coveted box of Ding Dongs.

The ATM is a near lock with a 25 point lead over 2nd. But with a maximum of 39 points still available to score, its still possible for a last lap upset. Who will claim the fake Rolex trophy?

In Formula 1 the battle is from 1st to 3rd with 10 points between them. Its a near lock, but the championship is still in reach from 3rd should Hood fail to score any points. 2nd place could still grab it by finishing 3rd or better if Hood doesn't score any points. If Joe (2nd) wins the race, Hood must finish 4th or better to claim the championship. Just like the thrilling finish in Brazil 2008, each driver must run flawlessly as its all come down to this last race!

The OCD may seem like a lock, but with 100+ points available, if the leader has trouble the championship could be grabbed from as far back as 4th place!

2009 Season, Week 6 (May)

The 2009 season is in the books (a bit earlier than I'd expected, being mid-2009), and was far and away the best season of racing Mini-AZ has seen yet! Getting four different series run in a day was challenging but worth it, with each series offering its own set of challenges and rewards.  The new points structures provided lots of leader board changes and intense competition on the track, with drivers scrapping for every point they could wrest from the field.

Across the six race weekends we had 17 different winners in 56 individual races on uncounted miles of track. Many tires were given up to the racing gods, tie-rods split, axles busted, batteries burned, and carbon fiber shattered. Arms ached from a death-grip on the radio, nerves frayed, sweat poured, and hearts pounded in desperation. Man and machine acted in concert, two wide, three wide into the corner, millimeters separation in a wheel-to-wheel fight across the line.

All for a trophy, the glory of winning, and worth every moment.

Thanks to all that participated in the '09 season and thanks again to DJ for opening his Porsche shop to us, giving Mini-AZ a welcome home for this sport we all enjoy so much.

There will be a brief interlude of Fun-Run events, and then we'll begin the 2010 campaign. To better fill out the calendar we will probably be adding three more race days to the schedule for a total of nine race weekends. So that's three more chances to score points and bring home the hardware.
